How to Keep Children Safe in a Digital World
How to Keep Children Safe in a Digital World
We live in a digital world - and so do our children. We often hear stories about children and online risks. But while the digital world may have its downsides, it has more advantages than disadvantages. Digital technology can enrich our lives in many ways. And it is our role as adults and parents to teach our children how to navigate the digital world as safely as possible. Here are some tips to help you.
Create a dialogue
Get involved in your child's digital world. Be committed, open and supportive. Share online time with your children as part of family life. Play together, talk about their favorite apps, games or websites. Find out how they work and what they get out of using them. Ask about their online experiences, who they talk to and if they have experienced problems. Assure your child that they can always come to you no matter what. Take your child seriously if he or she reports an unpleasant online experience.
Set rules and boundaries
Remember, it is us, as parents or guardians, who set the boundaries for our children. Set age rules for devices and online access with consequences for breaking them. Many popular apps and websites such as YouTube, TikTok, Instagram and Snapchat have age restrictions to protect children. Therefore, do not allow your child to sign up for sites if they are minors.
Be a role model
Our own digital habits are noticed by children. It may be easier said than done, but it is crucial to be aware of having a balanced approach to using technology yourself. Therefore, be a role model and follow the rules yourself. Or at least explain why the rules are different for adults. This is how we can help our children navigate responsibly in the digital age.

Watch your child's digital footprint
Teach your child to control their digital footprint. We leave 'traces' when, for example, we search on google, watch a video on YouTube, or write information about ourselves on our Facebook page.
A simple rule for younger children should be that the child should not give up their name, phone number or photo without parental or guardian approval. Older children who use social networking sites like Facebook should be selective about what personal information and photos they send out into the digital world.
Regardless of privacy settings, once the material is online, you can almost no longer control who sees it or how it is used. Therefore, also remember to respect your children and not share pictures of them online without their permission.
Be critical online
Children - like adults - need to be aware that not all information found online is correct, accurate or appropriate. Teach your child to evaluate information, be critical and aware of information and people found online.
